The Codex Boturini depicted toponyms, or place-names, using a pictographic writing system. The toponyms all come from the Nahuatl, the language that the Mexica spoke. Many of the places depicted in the codex have retained their original toponyms. Translating the toponyms into English and Spanish gives a sense of the way that the Mexica scribes used pictures and logograms to represent language.
